Your Children – Cold Timeline

  • 1 - 3 days

This is when your child will feel worst.  The first symptom of a cold is usually a sore throat. This is generally followed by sneezing or a blocked, sore or runny nose. About 1 in 3 children will get a cough and feel unwell.

Make sure your child drinks plenty of liquids to replace those lost from sweating and runny noses.  You should also make sure your child gets lots of rest and eats healthily.  Your child can start getting back to normal when they feel well enough.

  • 4 - 7 days

Older children should start to feel much better but a child under 5 may take a little longer to get well. Make sure your child continues to drink plenty of liquids and to eat healthily. Your child can start getting back to normal when they feel well enough.
  • 14 days

By this time your child should be fully recovered. However, if your child is under 5, they may only be starting to get back to normal by this stage.
